English abstract

"Kalle, You Know How to Read!" Preschool Teachers Highlight Preschoolers' Literacy Development

The basis of this study is a training project in which preschool class teachers were given opportunities to develop their content knowledge in the field of literacy through experiences in action and reflection. Seven teachers were interviewed about their experiences in conjunction with an assessment of the literacy development of pupils. The purpose of the study was to investigate what meaning making, according to the teachers, occurs in conjunction with assessment. The focus was on the teachers’ descriptions of their own meaning making as well as that of the students. The study is based on sociocultural theory and the pragmatic concepts of experience and meaning making as central analytical tools, which made apparent the teachers’ deepened understanding about students’ literacy development. From the material, a picture emerges that demonstrates how teachers and students reevaluate and use prior experiences together with new experiences to develop their knowledge and understanding. For example, the teachers describe how in conjunction with the assessment activity, students discovered they could read. In the encounter between the project’s subject focus and practical activities, the teachers were able to reevaluate former experiences and discover that preschool class students can read as well as how they read and how they – the teachers – can stimulate the students further. The intention of the study is to open up for discussion how a training project about literacy development can provide further opportunities on the part of preschool teachers to stimulate students further and help them meet the objectives set by the school.
ER -
